A society does not progress merely through economic development, technological advancement or academic excellence. True progress is achieved when people care for one another and work together to create a more inclusive, compassionate and just society. To help students develop into holistic and empathetic citizens, team players and leaders, Loyola school students of Class 10 and Class 12 went for an outreach programme on Saturday, 29th August, 2026 to various places in and around Jamshedpur. These visits are not meant to be just occasional activities undertaken merely to fulfil a requirement but become a way of thinking and living.

Class 10 A visited the Furida Old Age Home for women in Dimna, Mango which houses 27 inmates. Class 10 B had the privilege of visiting the Vivekananda Boys Hostel at Gandhi Ghat, a hostel for the underprivileged, orphan village boys. 10 C visited the R. P. Patel Cheshire Home in Sundernagar, 10 D visited the Old Age Home in Baradwari and 10 E went to Sri Sri Vidya Mandir in Hendaljuri, a small village on the outskirts of Jamshedpur. Class 12 B visited St. Xavier’s School, Lupunggutu, situated approximately 70 kilometres away from Jamshedpur.

The students performed songs and skits, conducted fun activities, conversed with the inmates and students. In trying to understand their struggles and making them feel wanted, the students forged meaningful human connections. It was also an opportunity for them to observe the discipline and positivity and learn gratitude for the bounty that they have been blessed with. The students of Loyola also donated useful articles with an open heart.

What began as a school visit quickly turned into an unforgettable, heartwarming journey. They came back enriched with genuine joy and overwhelming warmth.

The importance of social and rural outreach programmes is closely aligned with the Jesuit principles of education and service. It seeks to form the whole person by developing intellectual ability, moral character, spiritual depth and a commitment to the common good. Outreach programmes put these ideals into practice by encouraging students to become men and women for and with others. Through service, students learn to recognise the dignity of every person, especially those who are poor, marginalised or vulnerable. Jesuit education also encourages reflection and discernment. After participating in an outreach activity, students are encouraged to reflect on what they have seen, how they have responded and what they can do differently in the future. This process helps them connect experience with learning and action. It enables them to recognise their responsibilities and make thoughtful choices that contribute to the common good.
